Roof Glass Thickness

Each individual piece of glass could end up needing to be as thick as 2cm. The most economic glass tends to be 4 6mm thick which rarely can be installed wider than 1000mm hence most domestic roof lantern and conservatory installation featuring glazing bars every 600 to 900mm. For heights up to 5 m above floor level toughened glass can be considered if the other glass products cannot be used. In summer you may enjoy the freedom on the terrace or in an additional living room.

It is therefore vital to ensure that the correct type and thickness of glass is specified for each individual application. In our projects we usually use glass thickness from 1 4 to 3 4 for shower doors. Standard asphalt shingles add very little thickness to the roof because a standard three tab shingle is about 3 16 inch thick. When installed however the shingles overlap doubling the thickness.

These beams are toughened and laminated and your structural engineer will calculate the size and strength they need to be. Other types of shingles including number 1 wood cedar shake and tile are thicker although the thickness depends upon the individual brand of shingles you select. The vast majority of roof lights on the market rely on 2 toughened glass panes however at eos we feel a minimum outer pane of 8mm toughened and 8 8mm inner pane of laminated glass offers significant safety and security benefits. The terrace looks much more cozy and friendly.

In fixed and opening roof lights 4mm thick glass is just not sufficient and you should insist on 6mm in any glazed roofing product. Between 5 m and 13 m above floor level restrict the toughened glass thickness to 6 mm and 3 m2 in one pane. Thickness of glass railings and wall systems varies from 3 8 to 3 4. Under compression loads a 1cm cube of glass can withstand up to 10 tonnes before breaking.

However with the current trend for flat rooflights single pane rooflights can be installed up to 3m x 6m in one pane of glass. Over 13 m above floor level toughened glass is not recommended. We use only high quality tempered glass. The thickness of the glass and the integrity of the insulating glass unit therefore must be considered.

Adding these will probably be more expensive but the end effect is stunning the roof is all glazed.
